About “The Giant’s Shoulders”
“If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” – Isaac Newton, in a letter to Robert Hooke, 1676. (Though the metaphor goes back much further.)
“The Giant’s Shoulders” is a monthly science blogging event, in which authors are invited to submit posts on topics in the history of science — people, events, methods, discoveries, and so forth. Submissions are due on the fifteenth of each month, and entries will be aggregated and linked to on the host blog of the month on the 16th. Links to entries should be submitted to blogcarnival.com, or sent directly to that month’s host blog.
Though it is certainly acceptable to discuss the historical basis of pseudo-scientific ideas, contributions promoting pseudo-science are inappropriate for this carnival.

Caught my eye, because Claude Bernard liked the ‘Giant’s Shoulders’ concept – and used it to his advantage. The bicentenary of his birth is surfacing in 2013. A lot of his ideas still worth discussing, like ‘honesty, truth and proof in science’, ‘what price success’ (his marriage was a catastrophe!), ‘rivalry and controversy in science’ and his complex relationship with Pasteur, which embraces all the foregoing !!! Any tjhoughts? Would like to hear from you on my blog – http://tinyurl.com/BernardBlog
